I have to be honest though, it’s not always been easy.
I often think to myself, “wouldn’t it be great if I had the knowledge and the skills that I have now, when I was younger? I suppose what I am saying is, that it would have been so much easier if I had access to someone like me now, way back then.
I have had a varied career, from engineering, to construction, to youth work and charity development. Yes, over 30 years experience in working with and for young people and the same time in developing charities.
If only I could turn back time, with the knowledge that I now have.
One key point that I learnt many years ago, I will share with you now. The key to success is not about making deadlines, hitting targets and achieving goals. It isn’t about accomplishing tasks, although that is good. The key to success is growth, your personal growth, the growth of your team and the growth of your organisation.
I now know that I would definitely have grown, quicker, easier and better, if I had my future self to mentor and coach me. Unfortunately, the laws of physics prevented that from happening for me, but it doesn’t prevent you.
I have helped to found charities, growing their visions and delivering their missions. I have worked as a volunteer and right up to CEO level. I have saved struggling charities from closure. I have transformed charities into businesses and people into assets.

Secondly, if you work with other people, you need to know how you fit into the team. Imagine if everyone in the team was the same as you? SAGE: A wise, thinking person that can discern the best direction, can pre-empt the challenges and tap into inner strength to communicate motivating and reassuring knowledge.
SELLER: A passion for communicating the benefits of an organisation, service, product, etc. Involved in helping the organisation to grow from the outside, but also infectiously encouraging others to testify the benefits & quality of service & product.
SUPPORTER: A passion for caring for the people you associate with, especially if responsible for their management and personal development.
TEACHER: Naturally able to instruct people in knowledge to improve their potential and opportunity. Not necessarily someone who knows a lot, or who likes to tell other people what they know. A more appropriate test is whether or not people understand, remember and implement the things you say, i.e. ‘learn’.
